Kavivarya Moropant Botanical Garden in a Tuljaram Chaturchand college serves as a living laboratory for students and researchers, providing an opportunity to study plant diversity, ecology, and conservation.
It is a well-maintained area of 133 x 485 feet’s with a variety of sections namely medicinal, ornamental, succulents, butterfly garden, fernery, gymnosperms and aquatic plants.
The Botanical garden in the college features a diverse collection of Aquatic plants, including unique attraction of worlds largest water lily: Victoria Neverland Mumbai, Euryale ferox (Fox Nut), Nymphaea (Water Lily), and Nelumbo (Lotus) varieties, creating a beautiful and ecologically significant habitat. These aquatic plants not only add to the aesthetic appeal but also serve as valuable specimens for botanical studies.
Additionally, the garden houses a rich collection of Medicinal plants, such as Ocimum sanctum, Withania somnifera, Tinospora cordifolia, Zinziber zerumbet (Shampoo Ginger Lily), Abrus precatorius, Costus specious (Insulin Plant), Veteveria zizynoides which are widely used in traditional medicine. This collection provides students with hands-on learning opportunities in plant taxonomy, ethnobotany, and conservation. The botanical garden serves as a vital resource for education, research, and promoting awareness about plant biodiversity and sustainable utilization.
The Butterfly garden in the college plays a crucial role in promoting biodiversity, research, and environmental education. It is designed with nectar-rich plants like Lantana camara, Pentas, Ixora,Gardenia etc. to support butterfly life cycles.
Gymnosperms section is with important for their evolutionary significance, ecological roles, and economic uses includes Cycas, Zamia,Pinus, Thuja etc.
The succulent section is a dedicated area showcasing a variety of drought-resistant plants like Aloe vera, Agave, Echeveria, Sedum, Opuntia, Crassula species that store water in their leaves, stems, or roots. This section highlights the ecological adaptations of succulents and serves as an educational and aesthetic feature of the garden.
Fernery section of garden is with lush greenery and a cooling effect to the garden, making it an ideal space for relaxation.
Adenium section is with different varieties which commonly known as desert roses, are striking ornamental plants admired for their thick, swollen stems and vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers.
The Bonsai Section showcases a collection of near about 100 meticulously nurtured miniature trees like Tamarind, Orange, Sapota, Delonix, Ficus sps., coconut, guava reflecting the ancient art of bonsai cultivation. These carefully pruned and shaped trees represent a harmonious blend of nature and artistry, embodying patience and skill. The section features diverse species, each thriving in controlled conditions to maintain their miniature yet majestic forms. This tranquil space not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the garden but also serves as an educational resource, inspiring students and visitors to appreciate the beauty and discipline of bonsai cultivation.
The Mangrove Conservation Section aims to educate visitors about the ecological significance of mangroves and their role in coastal protection. By cultivating and showcasing different mangrove species, this section highlights their ability to prevent soil erosion, support biodiversity, and act as carbon sinks. Conservation efforts in the garden focus on raising awareness, promoting research, and demonstrating sustainable propagation techniques. This initiative helps in preserving mangrove species while inspiring students and researchers to contribute to their protection and restoration in natural habitats.
The Bulbous Plants Section showcases a fascinating collection of plants that grow from underground storage organs like bulbs, corms, rhizomes, and tubers. This section features a variety of seasonal and perennial species such as lilies, tuberose, amaryllis, Gladiolus etc.
Surabhi Nursery is established in Botanical Garden serve as a source of income for the college through the sale of ornamental, medicinal, and fruit plants. Saplings prepared in nursery are also used for different programmes for felicitation of guests to encourage green initiative.
The Botanical garden is not only with plant diversity it also serves as a vibrant habitat for diverse pollinators, attracting bees, butterflies, and birds. The rich floral diversity provides nectar and shelter, supporting ecological balance and biodiversity conservation.
